All About KAOS

Kirkcaldy Amateur Operatic Society (known locally as KAOS) was founded in 1907 and staged their first production ‘Pirates of Penzance’ in the Opera House, now the old ABC cinema, on the High Street, Kirkcaldy. The Society moved to its present home in the Adam Smith Halls in 1936. The building was refurbished in 1973 and is now known as the Adam Smith Theatre.

The Society’s aim of “Cultivating Music and Drama” is as true today as it was when the Society was founded. Early productions were from the world of Gilbert and Sullivan, however, during the twenties and thirties, musical comedy became predominant in the Society’s repertoire with shows such as “Rose Marie” and “The Desert Song”. In 1950, the Society produced “Show Boat” thereby marking the arrival of the “American Musical” to local audiences. This was followed by the Scottish amateur premiere of “Oklahoma” in 1954.

Since then, the Society has produced shows offering a wide variety of styles, including well known classics such as “South Pacific”, “The Merry Widow”, “My Fair Lady”, “42nd Street” and “Half a Sixpence” to name but a few.

The Society now regularly stages two productions a year – the main production being in November, with a second show in the spring, primarily chosen from non main-stream musicals.

Becoming a Member

The Society is always looking to welcome in new talent from the local community or from further afield.  The November show rehearsals tend to be on Monday evenings at a venue in Kirkcaldy and Spring shows are traditionally rehearsed on Saturday or Sunday at the Adam Smith Theatre.  Our Social Committee works very hard throughout the year putting on lots of events to get members together for a bit of fun and laughter (without the distraction of learning lines and dance moves).  Have a look at our Gallery to see some of our previous events.  If you would like to join the company then please send your details to our Secretary using the form found here.

Here you will be able to read the stories of past and present, find out what the company is working on and get all the latest news.
